Re: Proposal Submission — Exploring Christian Practices Initiative

ZionSphere / Open Doors Program

Fiscal Sponsor: Christian Ministry Alliance (CMA)

Amount Requested: $1,875,000 | Project Period: Five Years

Dear Members of the Lilly Endowment Grants Review Committee,

On behalf of ZionSphere and through the fiscal sponsorship of the Christian Ministry Alliance (CMA), I am pleased to submit this proposal in response to the Exploring Christian Practices Initiative. We respectfully request $1,875,000 over a five-year period to fund the ZionSphere Open Doors Program — a distinctive initiative that deploys immersive virtual reality technology to bring formative Christian practices to underserved youth who would otherwise never encounter them.

ZionSphere is a faith-technology organization based in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, with a singular conviction: that the ancient practices of Scripture engagement, contemplative prayer, and narrative theology can be made radically accessible through the emerging medium of virtual reality. Our flagship VR experience, Jonah and the Whale, immerses young people directly inside a living, breathing biblical narrative — not as spectators, but as participants. It is embodied faith formation for an increasing number of young people who have grown up digital, drifted from institutional church, and remain spiritually hungry in ways that traditional ministry approaches often struggle to sustain engagement.

The Open Doors Program is ZionSphere's access initiative. It exists to ensure that participation in this immersive experience is never limited by geography, income, or institutional capacity. Through a structured application and deployment model — developed in partnership with CMA, which provides governance oversight, partner vetting, and fiscal accountability — Open Doors provides free VR hardware, full platform access, curriculum guides, and ongoing support to eligible youth-serving organizations in rural, urban underserved, and low-income communities. Our five-year goal is to reach 5,000 youth through 100+ partner organizations across the United States.

What distinguishes this proposal is not technology alone — it is theological depth. ZionSphere's approach is grounded in published research frameworks drawing on embodied cognition, historic Protestant contemplative traditions, narrative theology, and the theology of experience. These are not novelties; they are time-honored Christian practices retrieved, adapted, and deployed through a medium that meets young people where they already are. Our work has begun to attract scholarly interest from university researchers in theology, education, and human-computer interaction — signaling that what we are building carries both pastoral urgency and academic legitimacy.

We are submitting this proposal as an early-stage organization with a proven concept, a credible theological foundation, and a scalable model. We are grateful to the Lilly Endowment for its commitment to funding promising strategies — not only established institutions — and we believe the Open Doors Program represents exactly the kind of innovative, access-expanding, community-building initiative this grant was designed to support.

We welcome the opportunity to discuss this proposal further at your convenience.

Respectfully submitted,

Starkey Roberson | Founder & CEO, ZionSphere
